Khamseh rug, first quarter 20th century, 260 x 103 cm (102” x 40,5”)
South Persia Tribal
A rug woven by members of the Khamseh Arab tribe, with the classic line of medallions enclosed by zig zag multi-colored lines symbolizing water. In the axis we find the ancient or “rain tree” or “tree of life”, flanked by birds and animals on both sides. The field is filled with birds, animals, bushes and tribal motifs. The primary border called ‘stairway’ featuring stepped forms alternate with ‘crosses’ formed by four arrows, was a favorite of the Arab nomad tribes. The secondary borders are formed by polychromatic diagonal lines. Low pile with some foundation visible as shown on pics. Ends secured. Overall fair condition.
