An Outstanding antique Uzbek Shahrisabz silk embroidered suzani from approx.mid 19th century. It has exceptionally fine silk chain stitched embroidery. The floral design is visually dazzling, with a central medallion surrounded by shrubs, palmettes and buds all with intricate detail. There is an asymmetrical free flow in the layout of the field design. The beauty is magnified by the magnificent colours, all of which are derived from natural dyes. The indigo dyed cotton Karbos ground fabric makes this piece part of a very rare group of indigo suzanis from rural Shahrisabz. The natural fading of the indigo (a common trait of this dye) near the centre doesn’t distract but rather adds to the beauty. It gives the the ground an abrash look that resembles the blue sky blue which contrasts beautifully with the rich floral embroidery. It is in good overall shape for its age. There is some sporadic abrasion of embroidery dominant near the bottom flowers of the field as seen on the photo, but enough silk remnants remain to sustain the patterns of the design so doesn’t distract. The indigo has faded at the centre but in a nice blended way, which really compliments the beauty. The cotton lining is magnificent. This is an important suzani, worthy of any good collection.
