Spectacular 19th century East Anatolian Ala Chuval in unused, mint condition. It has flawless, brilliant color and is the only complete - fresh off the loom - double ala chuval i know of. This piece was never finished by being separated into two bags as was customary for such things. For this reason alone, it is an important example because it confirms that these ala chuvals were woven as one long weaving before being turned into a pair of chuvals. The thin white line across the center is where it would have been cut to produce two chuvals. Bedding bags of this type are most often found in quite distressed, fragmentary condition from the hard usage they endured. An unfinished example such as this - in mint condition is almost unheard of. The scale of the solid color bands is excellent - indeed grand - especially when seen in such fresh, vibrant color. The overall effect of these qualities endow this piece with great power and presence. All dyes are natural. This was sourced out of an old dowery collection and is a truly beautiful and impressive example. Size: 125 x 51 inches.
