Excellent, old Mbole copper currency from the Congo. The Mbole tribes inhabited a region in Africa formerly known as Central Zaire. This type of currency was used in marriage ceremonies and dances - worn around the ankle. They are quite heavy and required padding when danced. In the Congo, masterfully worked metal objects, often with their design roots in the functional, also acted as a currency of the realm and were traded and passed down as part of the dowry. Metal working in this part of Africa is an ancient craft whose artisans were highly revered for their crafting of beautiful, elegant forms. This particular copper dance anklet is a very beautiful example with a rich surface and superb patina. It dates to the early 20th century - if not before. The size of this anklet is 10 inches in diameter by 7.5 inches wide by as much as 3/8 of an inch thick. It weighs nearly five pounds. The best of these Mbole currencies have a nearly universal appeal because of their modern, sculptural esthetic that compliments any interior, i have two other currencies in very different forms that were forged in iron. All three of these examples were carefully selected for use in my gallery decor and were purchased over 30 years ago. They are excellent examples and come with custom made stands. i recommend going to the following link http://www.rugrabbit.com/node/166956 to see additional images of the other two currencies and to read more about them. Thank you.
