Turkish Panderma prayer rug, ca. 1850; 4ft. x 6ft. / 140 x 186 cm.
Pale-olive, multi-faceted mihrab, with a floral “mosque lamp”, two floral columns,
and four flowering shrubs; at the spandrels, a pattern of reciprocally oriented
blossoms in red and purple on a soft blue-grey ground. Above and below the field,
a row of stylized tulips.
Borders: two secondaries with white ground populated with small blossoms; main border
with a blood red ground with large flowering plants each with three blooms, outlined in
white and pale olive.
Some wear evident, commensurate with its age of ~ 170 years.
