Late Edo/early Meiji period four leaf byobu screen featuring a particularly striking design of water birds and foliage along a stream. 168cm x 254cm (66inches x 100 inches). Unknown Kano school painter, circa 1860.
The stream, in the prettiest pastel blue, weaves through the composition in harmonious contrast to the huge swathes of warm gold leaf. The birds and flowers are drawn with a wonderful delicacy of touch against the graphic, modern simplicity of the gold and blue ground. It's a bold, successful and accomplished composition.
Condition is excellent, with only a few professional repairs to the ground and normal, small signs of age. The gold leaf shows little sign of wear, being a very uniform and consistent warm gold throughout. One very small loss of pigment to one of the flowers on the third panel. The reverse of the screen displays generally well, though does show evidence of past, possibly water, damage at the bottom. There is a small section of flaking lacquer to the bottom of the frame on one panel.
