nwp Long Rug, ca. 1850; 4’2” x 9’4” / 127 x 284 cm
Field composed of brightly colored, diagonal stripes converging at central trunk or stem.
possibly an abstracted tree. Stripes in madder red, ivory, medium blue, green, and peach
inhabited by small “s”- shaped pinwheels. Three quarters up, the stripes reverse direction
creating two concentric triangles at the nexus. Main border, paired, fluidly rendered boteh
on a peach ground. Secondary borders, a blue/ aubergine sawtooth. All natural colors,
expertly dyed with deep saturation. Selvedges wrapped in multicolored bands.
Areas of wear, some heavy at old fold lines. Bites out of lower right end. Upper left corner
frayed. Slight losses to multicolored selvedges.
