Antique Peking Chinese Carpet, ca.1900; 8’4” x 9’9” / 254 x 297 cm
Medium blue ground with a charming image of a cat stalking a butterfly within a medallion. Further well
proportioned butterflies and blossoms hold the field in an uncrowded arrangement, with a pairing of
peony and butterfly filling each corner as spandrel. Field edges defined by a horizontally symmetrical
arrangements of flowers in line. Main border on indigo ground with butterflies, flowers, and vases set
on stands in the corners. Minor borders with floral meander on buff.
2 x 4” patch just in upper field, small hole at upper edge near center. Areas of
wear. Please examine photos closely.
