Antique Sangtchuli Baluch Carpet, ca. 1870; 5’10” x 10’8” / 178 x 325 cm
Possessing 21 twenty-lobed medallions, possibly variants of what is known by some
collector as Harshangs, this weaving is very powerful despite having suffered its share
of wear at age 150+. The lower tenth of the carpet was woven with a dazzling medium blue.
And then sporadically for small highlights and border details. The Harshangs (?) likely com-
binations of old Persian court motifs, come in deep indigo, dark olive, and madder pumpkin
orange. Nicely drawn hooked diamonds are latticed between. Unusually for its age, the carpet
retains at least six inches / 15 cm of its original kilim ends.
Sides overcast-this has largely preserved the original checkered selvedge wraps. Areas of
wear to the foundation in places—Please examine photos closely.
