Two Tinned-Copper Candlesticks, ca. 18th Century ce or earlier;
Height # 1: 12 1/4” // 31 cm; width at base: 8 1/4” // 21 cm
Height # 2: 11 1/2” // 29 cm; width at base: 8” // 20 cm
Both of these candlesticks, very similar in appearance were donated as pair to the Shrine of
Fatima in Qum, in a.h. 1283 / 1866 c.e. as stated in inscriptions on their bases. The larger candlestick
has its on the upper surface of the base-disk. The smaller candlestick bears/ hides its inscription on the
bottom of its base.
The candlesticks differ slightly in size and in the crimping around the perimeter of their bases.
Both show exuberant plant forms with fluid harmony, and the charming irregularities of hand-wrought
metalwork. The patina has an lustrous ancient sheen, though there is some wear to the tinning revealing
some bright copper beneath. And in the candle-holders, some residue of brick-red wax or old polish remains.
