Antique Burmese Wooden Lacquer Box, ca. 16th - 19th Century ce;
Length: 13 1/4” // 34 cm; Width: 8” // 20 cm; Height: 6 1/8” // 16 cm
Roughly a trapezoidal pyramid, the box is decorated with a pair of mythical creatures, perhaps a Burmese
version of the “Qilin”, cavorting, flanked by large peonies. Similar solo creatures grace the longer side while
the ends each display a peony set amongst a spray of leaflets. All of figures are expertly drawn with with
exquisite rhythm and fluidity.
A red-lacquered tray and black lacquer panel with gold
painted flowers are found inside the box.
After approximately 200 or more years, the box bears some light marks of wear and losses to the lacquer surface
at the edges and joins.
