Khamse-h Rug, ca.1880; 4’7” x 5’7” // 140 x 170 cm
Deep indigo field with central red ground “garden” containing two vases and two opposed pairs of cypress
trees with two small birds placed between each. Stylized lions inhabit the corners of the rug. Between the
lions, at the ends, arrangements of four feather like cypresses, a vase, and various totemic symbols.
Similar scatter of totemic emblems at the sides with linked vases and paired birds. Main borders, alternating
birds, cubist flowers in a meander.
Half of main border missing at the ends, low pile/ worn overall. Overcast sides. a few tiny holes.
Despite the wear a lively, energetic composition with fluid rendering and charming character.
