Antique Peking Chinese Rug 9’1” x 11’’10” #7877 This third quarter 19th century Peking Chinese rug measures 9’1” x 11’’10” (277 x 363 cm). It has an old ivory colored field with a central medallion in the form of a floral wreath. The open center of the wreath contains a dragon coming up out of the sea beneath a very beautifully drawn phoenix bird. These two mythological animals represent yin and yang in Chinese mythology. The interpretation of this symbol is marital bliss. The Chinese people believe that the mating of the dragon and phoenix gave rise to the Chinese culture and country. The corners of the field are drawn in the same floral type as the wreath. The minor border is a lighter color than the field consisting of a modified Greek key surrounded by the same floral motif as in the field. Each one of these groupings is separated by an ornament. The major border is the same color as the field. The motif consists of blue phoenix birds with bright red waddles and cockscombs which seem to be winding in and out of the floral motif of meandering vines and flowers. This rug is sublime and beautiful. It is one of the most finely woven Peking rugs i have ever seen. It is 99% full pile and perfect. The ends and sides are complete. It is clean and ready to go. The buyer pays the shipping which includes insurance of $150.00.
