One of a kind small Colonial period pouch. Bolivia or Peru. 18th century possibly earlier. Silver wrapped silk thread embroidery on a silk velvet ground that shows a Spanish (Europeanized) idealization of an indian with feather headdress standing among floral branches with peacock. In one hand a circle (shield?) with roman numerals and letters within the circle that seem to spell "livertad" (i.e., liberty). The letters all seem clear except for the "e" which doesn't look like an e the way we would write it now. In the 18th Century there was a revolution fermenting in the Andean region among the indigenous populations which may account for this inscription. 5 x 3.25 inches.
