Antique Shirvan Karagashli Caucasian rug, ca. 1870; 4’ x 7’ / 122 x 213 cm
Three multicolored hexagonal diamond medallions and red-palmette finials set
on a deep indigo field. Multitudinous totemic emblems resembling flower-heads
surround them. The main border repeats a calyx leaf and wineglass design on a
goldenrod ground. Between the main and field are two small borders, the inner,
a surround of sawteeth, and the outer with elongated “s” shapes. The outermost
border features small blossoms set on sky blue. All of the colors are jewel-like,
saturated, and all natural.
Areas of wear, elongated holes along fold lines, a rough area at the lower end where
the weft structure has been disturbed. The blue outer border is partially missing at the
bottom and gone at the top. Selvedges are mostly absent save a few frayed remnants.
