Jalq'a bag in natural, un-dyed llama fiber. Bolivia, early 20th century. Weavings of the indigenous Jalq'a people from the Potolo region almost always have very strong synthetic reds, pinks and black dyes and date from the mid 20th century. Sometimes they are found without the strong synthetic reds. The weavings of these Jalq'a people can be exceptional in their compositional quality. The weaving expertise is amazing in the larger complex pieces. They often show clusters of closely spaced fantastic creatures like in the weavings seen below of images taken from the internet. i never collected the synthetic dyed pieces because of my bias against synthetics at the time, but i did manage to pick up a few of the natural colored pieces. This bag is one of them. It is not large. Size: 12.5 x 18 inches opened out. In use, it would have been folded along its length and sewn up along two sides with an opening at the top. Its side stitching is missing but sewn up - it would have been coca bag sized and could have been used for coca leaves or as a food bag. The design shows a winged quadruped with an animal inside its belly. The plain weave back shows simple stripes and the weave on the face is some kind of complicated twill-like structure?
