An excellent and rare bird themed silver surma dani / Kohl (eyeliner) container and pen from 19th century Persia or western Afghanistan border region. These were actually a prized possession of wealthy men. In Islamic world the tradition of men applying kohl around their eyes is rooted to the early years of the religion and possibly predates to the Egyptians. Some suggest it was good for the eyes, while others assume it helped reflect sun glare. Considering the relevance of Kohl as a tradition, many culture adapted it within the Islamic world. In Persia and Western Afghanistan this tradition was so integral that wealthy men would have elaborate examples made for them often as dowry offering from their bride. This excellent example is one such type. It is made up of nice silver with beautiful floral ornaments and motifs, intricately carved. The pen part is also beautiful. These are rare to find and important ethnographic jewellery of the region that compliment textile and rug collections.
