Ushak carpet fragment from a large mosque prayer carpet with three rows of three niches, late 18th century, 400-245cm, overall even pile; one small hole has been repaired. Compared to other Ushak mosque carpets, this carpet has an atypically vigorous, tribal feel with its simle meander bands dividing the niches, with bold floral infill above each niche. The central motif within each niche is a box-like form with two flower heds radiating from each vertex. These motifs read like pinwheels and impart a considerable sense of motion and dynamism to the carpet as a whole.
