This Tibetan under-saddle carpet or ‘makden’ has a floral design on either side in a reddish-orange main field with abstract clouds and mountains at either end and is enclosed by a narrow, unusual design, inner border. The wide main outer border consist of various motifs both floral and symbolic, while the very outer plain red border is made of red dyed nambu cloth covering a thick felt that was a common post-weave addition to protect the edges of Tibetan saddle carpet from fraying. Only two of the four girth strap holes have been cut open for use and both are edged with leather, while the other two are left pile-less as woven. The wool warp and wool and hair weft are hand spun (as can be seen in the close-up of the uncut girth strap ‘hole’) and the colours are a mix of organic and aniline dyes. The size is 115cm x 62cm (approx. 45.25in x 24.5in) and it is backed by a medium-weight plain cloth. Made circa 1920 it is in excellent condition.
