Back
Bolivian shaped poncho, alpaca wool, 44 x 69 inches, made from 4 panels with selvedges on all four sides, sewn together to make the complete garment, circa 12th-15th century(?). Excellent condition with the eception of one area of damage on one side.
This is a puzzling textile: shaped textiles are very rare in Pre- Columbian and Colonial era textiles from this area; the striped design is very similar to some textiles from the Pampa Acora region, however the weaving texture/handle is unlike typical Pampa Acora or other Colonial era Bolivian textules, rather it is more loosely packed and much close in texture to some Pre- Columbian texties. The damaged area does not appear to be from use, but from circumstances of burial.
