a Lovely Large Antique Khotan Carpet, 1880-1900,
300 × 145 cm (9' 10" × 4' 9"),
Although not very expensive this Khotan that measures 300 × 145 cm (9′ 10″ × 4′ 9″) knotted in Sinkiang (Xinjiang), an autonomous territory in northwest China, known throughout the carpet world as East Turkestan, is a collector’s item. In the ancient world “the pomegranate tree” that decorates the main field of this charming rug had an important symbolic meaning and as a symbol of fertility it can be traced back to the Sumerians. At opposite ends of the main field two vases give rise to two pomegranate trees which meet in the center forming a rhombus. Three different frames enclose the inner message to underline its value. Knotted at the end of the 19th century, this specimen is in perfect condition and with its soft colors fits elegantly between antique and modern furnishings.
