a pair of wooden loom sticks cod. 0733. Chancay culture. Perù. Ca. 1000 to 1470 a.d. Well-preserved for their material and age. Size of flute player (they are similar in size): 1.8" w x 14.25" h (4.6 cm x 36.2 cm); 14.75" h (37.5 cm) on stand. One is topped by a figure of a flute player wearing a headdress with a feather projecting from its center, the other by a parrot-like bird shown in profile. Both have openwork motifs - the legs of the flute player are separated, while the bird perches atop an open box with a cross inside of it. The bird has a shell bead remaining in one of its eyes; its other eye and those of the flute player presumably both had beads as well. Both were integral to the running of a loom, and were used to create the textiles for which the Chancay are so famous. Ex Wasinghton d.c. – usa private collection
