Back
Above-saddle carpet woven in the Ningxia region of China in the early 1900’s. The main border consist of interlinked swastikas, while the inner border features a single key meander. At either end of the burnished gold center field are clouds, mountains and waves, the classic Mt. Meru design. At the very center of the main field is what could loosely be interpreted as a double dorje design, but more likely is a flower surrounded by trellis-like work, and anchored there by four distinctive flowers. Woven circa 1900-1920 it has a cotton warp and a wool weft and the size is 81cm x 50cm (approx. 32in x 23.5in). Wear commensurate with use as an above saddle carpet but all in all in fairly good condition for its age / use. a colourful but overall pleasing design probably made for the Tibetan market.
