Antique Ersari Turkmen torba of exceptionally large size. www.knightsantiques.co.uk Circa 1900. Size: 6ft 6in x 1ft 9in (199 x 53cm) excluding tassels. Torba are shallow wall bags used mainly in tents or yurts for the storage of personal belongings, they were also used to decorate the sides of a camel in a wedding procession. Often only the piled face survives and the plain weave backs have been removed. This is one of the largest size torba that i have handled, it probably originates from the borders of Northern Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. The design is a variant of one of the classic Ersari designs. Note the original tassels which make this a very decorative display item. The torba is in excellent condition with slight even wear and good pile. Hand washed and ready for display. Stock Number: h-452.
