Antique Ersari Beshir Turkmen torba with ikat design.
www.knightsantiques.co.uk
Circa 1880.
Size: 5ft 2in x 1ft 4in (157 x 41cm)
Torba are shallow wall bags used mainly in tents or yurts for the storage of personal belongings, they were also used to decorate the sides of a camel in a wedding procession. Often only the piled face survives and the plain weave backs have been removed.
This example has a variant of the well known ikat design.
The torba is in fair condition with slight even wear and good pile, as can be seen the torba has been cut through the middle and re-joined with fabric replacing the missing part, there are also some historic old stains. The wool is exceptionally soft.
Hand washed and ready for display.
Stock Number: h-451.
