Circa 1900.
Size: 1ft 5in x 1ft 2in (44 x 36cm).
This is a good example of Varamin salt-bag in piled weave with a panelled floral design. The salt-bag has soft wool and excellent colour, note the panel on the reverse of the neck with small animals, the lower back is in plain weave. Salt-bags were used by the nomads to store and carry rock salt, both for their own use and for their animals; salt was a very valuable item and it therefore deserved to be stored in these beautiful bags which are usually so tightly woven as to be almost waterproof.
The salt bag is in excellent condition with very slight even wear and a few signs of use.
The bag face has been hand washed and is ready for display.
