Silk embroidered with silver metal sequins. a small section (55x63cm) almost certainly from a wedding garment. In Tunis, around the turn of the century, the bride's costume had many meters of silk heavily embroidered with silver, or gold washed silver, thread and sequins. It would be stored in her dower chest, but later in life, if on some occasion she needed money, it would be taken out and burned to retrieve the valuable metal. It was, however, customary to keep a section as a reminder - and this is probably what this is. The green silk is lined with black and the piece is surprisingly heavy for its size.
