Richly embroidered silk tapestry, France, circa 1800, 4.9 x 9.4 feet (145 x 285 cm), was likely used with an architectural valance along the top where there is no border design. Likely part of a grand suite of curtains for a magnificent State bed. The field pattern of bold, beautifully-drawn and delicately shaded Acanthus leaves is typical of high French style during the Napoleon era. The border echoes this early 19c period, as well.
