Back
a Persian Afshar khorjin face. Most likely early 20 C.---it has cotton warps. Size is 27” x 26” (69 cm x 66 cm). Very good condition. Vibrant colors that all appear to me natural, stable. Pile wool is soft and glossy. Wefts are indigo-dyed cotton, and are continuous with the two-cord selvage wrapping. This selvage shows on the right side, but on the left side this selvage is partly obscured by the finish---alternating blue and red wool in the “herring-bone” stitch that seamed the face to the flatweave back of the Khorjin. This left side even includes a narrow strip of the flatweave back, still sewn into the side finish seam—enough to show that the flatweave back of the bag was entirely of red wool, with no stripes, like the remnant strip of it across the bottom. a completely red back, plus the elaborate sumac designs of the closure panels, prompted my identification as Afshar.
