Very interesting Pre-Columbian coca bag with fantastic creatures. This bag has a uniquely complex composition of interlocking imagery on each side. Both positive and negative spaces are readable and can be read from seemingly any direction. This bag is more difficult to decipher than most Andean pieces, but the composition is clearly intentional and there is true genius in it. There are numerous stylized animal heads and body parts. I've been studying Andean textile imagery for many years and this piece presents a real challenge to comprehend. One's eye can play with the imagery endlessly. a.d. 900 - 1200. Size: 9.5 x 7 inches.
