Antique South Caucasian rug, 4' x 6'7, Karabagh region, mid nineteenth century. All wool foundation. Although the rug has a variation of 'Fachralo' or 'Sevan' Kazak medallion design, the black wool wefting indicates a Karabagh weave. Extremely soft, lustrous wool in a palette of soft salmon red, rich golds, soft greens, deep blue, and blue-green, and warm ivory. Small birds in the upper part of the medallion and around its exterior. Spectacular 'crab' border with blue-green and salmon flowers against an ivory ground. Much of the rug has even low pile, but there are areas of wear to the foundation in the lower part of the rug, and a small patched hole (see photos). Selvedges redone. Small losses at either end. Supple, floppy handle. a beautiful, relatively early piece, in mostly good condition. but priced accordingly because of the localized areas of damage.
