Antique Chodor Turkmen carpet, 5'7 x 10'1, 1850-1880. Wool goat hair warps and white cotton wefts typical of Chodor weavings. Thick, velvety pile in saturated deep burgundy red, purple, and soft, khaki sage green, soft orange, with some pale yellow as well. Traditional Chodor pattern with octagonal guls in the 'Tauk Nuska' design. Sbtle variations in design - some of the little Tauk Nuska' animals have ivory rather than red heads. Overall condition of pile areas is excellent except for one small area of damage on upper right end (see photos). Original distinctive checkered Chodor selvedges mostly intact. Unusual wide skirts at both ends in a richly detailed, mixed kilim and pile technique. Small damaged areas at the ends of the kilim skirts (see photos).
