An Exceptional Antique Uzbek Suzani from Shahrisabz with near perfect silk chain stitched embroidery on a yellow Adras (silk warp / cotton weft) ground. These suzanis are sometimes wrongly attributed in trade to Lakai suzanis. It dates to early 3rd quarter of the 19th century and a very fine example of the era. The precision of the embroidery is absolutely mind blowing. Look at the close images and you can the directional chain-stitch that gives the design elements texture; only a master embroiderer can execute such precision. The design is a mihrab and these large format susanis were referred to as ruijoi (a term referred to bridal bedcover). Beautiful flowers repeat with intricate boteh motifs that boast intricate details and outlines. The colours and dyes are fantastic. We see gorgeous indigos, a salmon/pink that is probably lac or some sort of insect dye. We see gorgeous blues, greens, reds, white and all contrasts beautifully against the yellow ground. The confusion of the embroidery is excellent. But ground fabric has some sporadic wear and a few marks, here and there. But this is reflected in the asking price and a piece of such beauty, these natural age wears are not a bother. It is finished with Russian import floral cotton with Ikat edging. a good piece worthy of a good collection. Size: 236cm x 175cm.
