a dazzling and dynamic antique Uzbek embroidered appliqué felt rug made by the kungrat group around early 1900’s. The embroidered felts are sometimes attributed wrongly to the Uzbek Lakai group when in fact they were made by the Uzbek Kungrat group; the free flowing motifs taken from the design pool of Kungrat rugs and textiles. This example is really nice. The foundation is made of an appliqué of dark brown and red felt. It is embroidered in wool with archaic motifs surrounding free flowing tribal flower motifs within a lattice form. i love the random spots and abrash on the empty outer border. Rich saturated colours make the design pop up. And colour is used in a very sophisticated manner and not randomly.. There is a tribal beauty to this piece that somewhat resembles the aesthetic beauty of modern art. One simply can’t help but keep looking at the design.
