Antique Western Afghan Timuri / Baluch camel ground prayer rug with tree of life.
Circa 1880.
The rug is beautifully drawn with a 'tree of life' design and has excellent colour, the camel wool ground is very soft. Note that there are in fact three separate 'tree of life' design elements, two to the field and one in the mihrab. The hand placements contain a 'bird head tree' design. The rug has a traditional Timuri 'star' design to the main border. There is a strong probability that this rug is the work of the Timuri tribes. The are a number of small details in silk through out the rug.
The rug is in good condition with even wear and medium / low pile, The rug retains parts of the decorative kilim end finishes at each end, the lower end has extensive weft work decoration. The end kilims show some signs of wear with some losses.
The rug is suitable for light domestic use.
