Antique Bessarabian kilim with basket design on a soft blue ground.
Late 19th century.
Bessarabian kilims originate from Eastern Europe; from an area that is now Moldova, North Western Romania and South Eastern Ukraine. Kilim production in these areas can be traced back to the 18th century and continues today in a limited capacity; the diverse cultural heritage of the region has inspired designs that are unique. The combination of colour and bold design has made Bessarabian kilims very popular with collectors and interior designers in recent years.
This example has a scarce design of two large baskets with colourful floral sprays on a very light indigo blue ground, the border is in a soft cream / ivory colour containing a linked abstract floral design. This kilim is very easy on the eye and would make an outstanding furnishing item.
The kilim is in excellent original condition with no wear or repairs.
