From Russia with love: Karabagh rugs are known for their vibrant colors. Typical colors include deep red, blue, green, yellow and orange. This example is an antique Caucasian Karabagh rug from around 1900 with the so-called Gol Farang pattern. The Gol Farang pattern is a distinctive design found in some Persian and Caucasian rugs. The term “Gol Farang” means “foreign flowers” and indicates the Western influence in the design of these patterns. The Gol Farang pattern mainly consists of floral elements. These often include roses, carnations, lilies and other flowers that are depicted in artistic and detailed manner. In contrast to the stylized floral motifs of traditional oriental carpets, the flowers in the Gol Farang pattern are often depicted in a more realistic and lifelike manner, reflecting a Western influence. The Gol Farang pattern is a beautiful example of the fusion of Eastern and Western art and shows the ability of Caucasian weavers to integrate different influences and create unique works of art.
