Antique Ersari Turkmen ensi of traditional design with excellent colour and good age.
Circa 1870 or earlier.
Ensi were door hangings used to cover the entrance to a yurt.
This early example has the four panels, said to represent the windows to paradise; these are separated by the central panel and vertical panels filled with traditional Turkmen designs, the ensi is framed by the ivory ground borders of 'ashik' design. The lower end has two elem panels that are beautifully drawn.
The ensi is in fair condition with some wear and medium / low pile. it is probable that the ensi has been reduced in width at some time in its life.
The ensi rug is suitable for light domestic use or would make an outstanding display item.
