Size: 5ft 1in x 3ft 2in (156 x 97cm).
Antique Turkmen rug of small size and early date.
Circa 1800-50.
An intriguing small Turkmen rug, with an archaic gul design. The three vertical rows of seven Turkmen guls are on a abrashed madder red / brown ground. The drawing of the guls is of a simple form giving the rug a very primitive feel. This is without any doubt an early rug and attribution is difficult, experts have so far suggested, Ersari, Kizil Ayak, Chodor and Yomut.
The rug is in fait condition with wear and medium / low pile. Both ends have been re-woven at some time in the rugs life
The rug is suitable for light domestic use or would make a great display item.
