Size: 5ft 0in x 2ft 6in (153 x 77cm).
Antique Baluch or Turkmen rug of scarce design.
Circa 1850 or earlier.
A very interesting rug from the region of northern Afghanistan and the borders of Turkmenistan; the rug has an unusual repeat small medallion design on a orange / red madder ground; the border designs are associated with both Baluch and Turkmen tribal weavers. The old collectors label attached to the rug attributes it to the 'Taimani Baluch'; although it is entirely possible that the rug is by a Turkmen group related to the Ersari. The rug is without any doubt of some age and a rare design, further study would shed some light as to the correct attribution.
The rug is in fair condition, with even wear and medium / low pile, historic repairs and patches in places.
The rug would make an good display as a wall hanging.
