Back
Folding ‘altar table’ that a Tibetan Lama (a Buddhist 'priest') would have taken with him on his travels to use when performing sacred rituals. Each ‘face’ (front and sides) is made of a single piece of wood that has been intricately hand-carved using the ‘open method’; the front panel is decorated with two pigmented peacocks and trellis work while a flower surrounded by trellis work is carved into each end piece. The removable top is plain grained wood that has been coated with natural lac resin (shellac). There are no nails or metal work whatsoever used in its construction, all joins are simply 'fitted wood'. Size when erected 78.5cm long x 37 wide x 39cm high (approximately 31in x 14.5in x 15.5in), folded 78.5cm x 37cm x 10.5 (approx. 31in x 15.5in x 4in). It is in very good condition, especially for its age, with no repairs.
