Ladies leather boots with raised toecaps, silk embroidery, Central Asia, 2nd century bce – 2nd century ce. l. 22 cm; h. 14 cm. Published: Arts from the Land of Timur. An Exhibition from a Scottish Private Collection. Edinburgh: Sogdiana Books, 2012, Cat. no 18. These leather boots by design and decoration are very close to the shoes of the nomads of Eurasia in the 4th century bce – 2nd century ce. This type of footwear existed among the nomads of Xinjiang, Altai, and north-western Mongolia. Boots with a similar shape were unearthed in the Astana site near modern Turfan in Xinjiang, but dated to an early Tang dynasty.
