a magnificent antique silk warp / cotton weft Adras early Ikat fragment hanging from Bukhara. While it looks like a piece of modern art, it actually dates around mid 19th century. a very rare and early design combining classic traditional boteh motifs repeat in yellow and white and arranged on a geometric triangle pattern repeating in rich red and light blue. The visual effect it creates is dazzling. The use of primary colours (all of which deserved from natural dyes) creates a sharp contrast. This was extracted as cut out strips and put back together to its original glory. Often earlier ikats like this were cut out and put as inner edging in chapans. It has a beautiful floral lining. Lovely patina. And a good size to be displayed as a work of textile art. Size: 94cm x 35cm (37” x 15.25”). …..
