Webinar: “May the Evil Eye Not Strike! Magical Protection in Islamic Textiles, Dress and Jewelry” with Chris Aslan, Textile Specialist, Author, Entrepreneur, Collector, Adventurer and Tour Leader/Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, and the United Kingdom. Presented by Textile Museum Associates of Southern California (Tma/Sc). Saturday, November 16, 2024, 10 am Pt / 1 pm Et / 6 pm Gmt-London. Virtual via Zoom / Free Registration: https://tinyurl.com/TMAEvilEyerrb Belief in the Evil Eye is still widespread across the Muslim world, and is particularly prevalent amongst women, who often fear the jealousy of other women and the potential curse this can bring. Amulets, embroidered mirror-work, beads, holy embroidered Sudoku (yes, really!) and power emblems such as the hand, the eye, rams’ horns, the triangle and the chilli all help protect those fearful of the Evil Eye or the jinn. Whether adorning a person or a cradle, house or yurt, textiles and jewelry and even architecture have been shaped by a desire to provide spiritual protection.
