This third quarter 19th century Turkish prayer rug measures 3‘1“ x 4‘3“. The rug looks Persian, but the knotting is asymmetric, open weft which is an Indian knotting. It has a very interesting design very similar to a third quarter 19th century Persian prayer rug. The writing around it is a prayer. If there is a date woven in there i can’t find it. The prayer niche is in a dark blue with flowers and trees. The background is in a dark rose with a floral motif . The inner border is ivory. On three sides there is a script motif. The outer border is woven with a cartouche motif. Five cartouche are filled with writing and six cartouche have a floral motif. There’s a little bit of wear in the rug. i guess that’s to be expected in a rug of this age. This is a very beautiful rug. The end and sides are complete.
