Webinar: "Nomads of West Iran and their Amazing Transport Bags" with Paul Ramsey, Gallerist, Exhibition Curator, Rug Expert and Educator Denver, Colorado. Saturday, January 25, 2025, 10 am Pt / 1 pm Et / 6 pm Get - London. Co-sponsored by Textile Museum Associates of Southern California & New England Rug Society. As a result of Iran’s unique geography and climate, extensive pastoral nomadism has thrived there for likely thousands of years. Typically these pastoralists – referred to as transhumants by specialists – would travel with their flocks of sheep, goats and pack animals from winter pastures to summer grasslands in valleys and slopes of the Zagros mountains, returning to the lower pastures for the colder season. In these migrations, the nomads’ pack animals carried their possessions - their tents and rugs, looms, and other necessities of life – bedding, clothing, covers, food, cookware and more. They were usually carried in various textiles made by the women, bags of various sizes and shapes: double bags called khorjin, trunk-like bags called mafrash, and many more sizes and shapes for the diverse essentials of life. This presentation will discuss the major groups of traditionally nomadic people along the Zagros in western and southern Iran, and show examples of their transport bags, both in situ as well as current examples, as complete bags or as face panels now in private collections.
