Shisheh Dermeh is a traditional handwoven textile from the Qashqai tribe in Fars province. In Turkish, Shishe means “stick,” and Dermeh refers to “weaving.” This technique likely gets its name from the way weavers insert multiple sticks between the threads to create intricate patterns. For many years, Shisheh Dermeh weaving was highly valued among the Qashqai tribes and nomads. However, over time, it gradually disappeared due to shifts in lifestyle and the complexity of its weaving techniques. This art form evokes a sense of a distant past—the fleeting moments of stillness and tranquillity between long journeys. It reflects the resilience and unyielding spirit of those who were constantly on the move. Shisheh Dermeh was crafted using the most durable wool fibers. The warps were twisted in two closely related colors, concealing the wefts to create a dense, sturdy fabric. This made it ideal for producing strong khorjins (saddlebags), chantehs (small bags), and mafrashes (bedding/storage bags), essential for nomadic life. This particular khorjin is in excellent condition, with all its original straps intact and undamaged. It features two distinct patterns on the front and back—one adorned with a star motif.
