Ottoman Silk and Gold Embroidered Wall Hanging (Possibly 17th–18th Century)
Private Collection, Budapest – Available by Agreement
This exquisite silk wall hanging, richly embroidered with gold threads, is a rare and distinguished example of Ottoman textile artistry. Likely produced in the late 17th or 18th century, the composition features a central stylized Tree of Life flanked by four birds, all enclosed within a grand architectural mihrab-like arch. The deep indigo silk background and the symmetrical use of floral and geometric motifs reflect the refined aesthetic sensibilities of Ottoman courtly and devotional textiles.
Measuring approximately 120 × 250 cm, the piece was entirely hand-crafted using high-quality silk and metal-wrapped threads. Its iconography and stylistic parallels suggest it may have served as a qibla wall hanging or ceremonial textile, used in a domestic or religious setting to mark the direction of prayer or to adorn a sacred space.
Similar embroidered panels from this period and cultural context are preserved in major museum collections such as the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Benaki Museum. Comparable auction results indicate a significant market value for well-preserved examples of this type.
