Caucasian Kazak Rug with Turtle Medallions, ca. 1885–1910
90 × 160 cm | Wool on wool | Symmetrical knots | Red wefts
A bold and compact village weaving with twin stylized “turtle” medallions on a deep indigo field. a directional V-shaped arch at one end suggests a stylized mihrab. Classic Caucasian ram’s horn main border flanked by floral rosette guards. Natural dyes with some early aniline red bleeding. Structure is distinctly Kazak, while the design reflects Karabakh influence—likely woven by Armenian or Kurdish villagers near the Kazakh–Karabakh cultural border.
Some age-appropriate oxidation, but otherwise plush, solid, and professionally cleaned.
