a rare, rustic and possibly unique Yastik, from eastern Anatolia, mid-19th century. The pattern is derived from the Ottoman "cintamani" motif of three circles in a triangular arrangement. On the yastik, these circles are graphically transformed into three squares consisting of rows of colorful red an blue, as well as black and white squares. The dense wool pile haas black wefts: very good condition, no repairs. This is an ancient Buddhist pattern widely used on very early textiles and rugs, particularly from the 16th-18th centuries. This piece was in the special exhibition of Yastiks in Istanbul during the icoc in 2007. It was also published in the massive 2-volume catalogue: weaving heritage of anatolia, (anadolu dokuma mirasi), Volume 1. This yastik appears in the "Yastik Catalogue" section, p. 204, pl. 66. The size is 18 x 27 inches (46 x 69 cm). Please contact: dennisdodds@juno.com, and www.maqam-rugs.com.
